“Thanksgiving is tapping us on the shoulders again, and every year it seems to arrive more swiftly than before. I wasn’t always able to smile during this time of the year, for doing so meant consciously conjuring up pictures of my family wrapped around the massive, chestnut dinner table sharing in hearty, belly laughs and mouthwatering food.

I truly relished Thanksgiving as a child in the South, but I also loathed the family filth we swept under rugs, and the secrets I concealed from the world.”
